Fangirl Quest 2013
We’re changing a few things in the blog right now, so some of the links might be broken for a while. Worry not!
There are a few photos in Tiia’s photography blog from our first filming location roadtrip. You might wanna check those out while we get everything sorted here!
This is the trip we did in the summer of 2013. Two thousand miles, countless of hours of driving, shady hotels and SO MUCH FUN!
- Click on TAG after each destination to see related posts
- More details and information here!
- You might also come across the tags allonsy and wibbly wobbly. Allonsy (or Allons-y! as The Doctor would say) is code for confirmed locations, wibbly wobbly means it’s something we might be interested to see but will most likely not have the time. Need to remember those just in case though, hence the tag.
A: Dublin [TAG] M
aroon 5 @ the O2 Areena. Gig has been cancelled *disgruntled mumbling* so instead: shenanigans and stuff
B: Wexford. Spending one night, sightseeing.
And by sightseeing, we mean the pub. From here, we’ll take the ferry over to Pembroke.
C: Pembroke. Arriving by ferry, picking up our rental car for 8 days.
On our way from Pembroke to Cardiff we’ll visit Barafundle Bay [TAG]. Some important scenes of Third Star were filmed here, so this is what we’d call a Benedict related destination. We’ll also have a late lunch/early dinner at The Bush Inn [TAG] that served as The Cross Keys Pub in Sherlock and visit Three Bears Cave [TAG] that has been used as a location in Sherlock, Merlin, Doctor Who and Torchwood. Popular spot, aye? You can see the exact route here.
D: Cardiff [TAG] Sweet, sweet Cardiff. All sorts of things to do here and nearby: The Doctor Who Experience, some Sherlock filming spots, if we’re lucky even a tour of Cardiff University that was used in some scenes. From Cardiff we’ll also make a day trip to Caerphilly Castle (They filmed some Merlin scenes here! [TAG]) and Caerleon [TAG]. Wow, some history here! Main reason for us to go: the Arthurian legends. We’ve also added Puzzlewood [TAG] to the list, Merlin and Doctor Who have both used it as a filming location on several occasions. Check out the route for this day trip here.
E: Shakespeare’s Globe, London [TAG] Colin Morgan at Shakespeare’s Globe. ‘Nuff said. (On the map this is hiding behind the letter L ‘cause we’re going to London twice. Don’t question our choices)
F: Bala Lake Railway [TAG] Bradley and Colin (stars of BBC’s Merlin) went here while filming The Real Merlin and Arthur! We’re also following in their footsteps to Bwlch y Groes (try saying that many times fast) along a road that’s apparently somewhat dangerous to drive. Guess we’ll be driving extra carefully…
G: Doune Castle [TAG] Some Game of Thrones stuff was filmed here! Winter is coming! We’ll also be spending the night in the lovely village of Doune.
H: Inverness [TAG] Hunting Nessie at Loch Ness. Not exactly a fangirl location but since everyone we’ve asked about what to do in Scotland tells us to “go north”, we figured we might as well add some Supernatural-style monster hunting to the itinerary. Plus the scenery along the way should be pretty breathtaking.
I: Edinburgh [TAG] Spending the night, seeing some local night life, hopefully meeting up with a friend who lives here. We also just discovered that apparently both Edinburgh Castle and The Edinburgh Vaults are haunted so we’re hoping to make time for both and some ghost hunting.
J: Hadrian’s Wall [TAG] We’re spending night in Northumberland and might even have time to visit the inspiration for The Wall in Game of Thrones (and A Song Of Ice And Fire)
K: Warner Bros. Studio Tour London [TAG] Yes, we’ve added yet another destination to the list. No, we haven’t lost our minds. Close to London, it’s already on our route and after careful calculations and rearrangements of our Scotland itinerary actually totally doable. And come on, what’s a fangirl trip to the uk without some Harry Potter?
L: London [TAG] Sherlock locations, Who locations, you name it! And not to mention Derren Brown! Might do a tour at BBC, visit the London Film Museum, the Graffiti Walk, the BBC merchandise shops…
