Fangirl Quest

Fangirl Quest is an ongoing project that combines our love of TV and movies, photography, travel and much more.

What started as an epic road trip to filming locations all over the UK eventually led to a series of photos we like to call SCENEFRAMING. Though this is still the heart and soul of our Quest, it has grown into something much bigger...

We attend events and premieres, visit attractions, meet other fans, organise giveaways and competitions and go on road trips as often as we can. And then we blog about it all.

See you on the road!

Show: Smallville
Location: Robson Square, Vancouver, Canada (on Google Map | Wikipedia)

We visited a few Smallville filming locations during our stay in Vancouver. Here’s two shots from Robson Square, featuring the lovely Kristin Kreuk and our dear Jensen Ackles

Other shows, such as The X-Files and Arrow have also used this location for a few scenes, but we’ll return to those a bit later..!

Movie: Thor: The Dark World
Location: Old Royal Naval College, London, UK (website)

Empire Magazine has a valid question: “Is This The Most Popular Filming Location In The World?”

It’s a good one and we’d like to ask the same. The list of films that were filmed at the Old Royal Naval College is staggering: Les Mis, Sherlock Holmes, King’s Speech, Four Weddings and A Funeral, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, Thor: The Dark World, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.. just to mention a few.

So, to every film fanatic who’s heading up to London one of these days.. write this thing down. Get a guided tour. Hear hilarious stories of Johnny Depp’s shenanigans and all sorts of other cool stuff.

Also, check out the rest of the movies we’ve framed here (so far).

Movie: Batman Begins
Location: St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, UK (website)

One of the most beautiful interiors we’ve ever set foot in: the grand staircase of St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel. Short bits of Batman Begins were filmed here, including Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) carrying Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) to safety and Batman (Christian Bale) doing this mighty jump through a huge cloud of bats.

The same staircase was used in the legendary Spice Girls video Wannabe, and other parts of the hotel in films like Harry Potter.

See more photos from the staircase in our London travel post!

Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Location: Old Royal Naval College, London, UK (website)

From Wikipedia: The Old Royal Naval College (..) has “outstanding universal value” and is reckoned to be the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles.”

Once you’re stood in the middle of King William Court, you really can’t help but to agree. Dozens of famous movie scenes were filmed here, i.e. Les Misérables and Sherlock Holmes, but even if you weren’t a film tourist like us, you will enjoy the beautiful Painted Hall and the whole area as a travel destination.

Movie: Stardust
Location: Castle Combe, UK (on Google map)

Nothing is as cute and serene as this little stonehouse village in Wiltshire, England. It’s the same place where we sceneframed War Horse.

Well worth a visit - a perfect spot for a summer day’s cup of tea and a chat with the lovely locals. To find out more, visit Castle Combe’s website.

Movie: Hot Fuzz
Location: Wells, UK (on Google map)

Oh no! We definitely should’ve had more time (and daylight!) to spend in Wells. A pretty, pretty place and so many scenes to shoot. Hoping we’ll get to go back some day. A summer day would be nice!

We recommend visiting this place to those who like Hot Fuzz, pretty cities & magnificent old buildings to lay their eyes upon. Just check out the Bishop’s Palace and their Cathedral on Wells’ website and you know what we’re talking about.

Miniseries: Pride and Prejudice
Location: Lacock, UK (on Google map)

Wow, the cutest little village ever! It’s a bit of a ride if you don’t live anywhere close, but if the weather is fine and you simply need to get away from it all, this is the perfect place to visit. They even filmed some Harry Potter here!

Lacock has a huge, beautiful Abbey you can visit, too.

Location: Helsinki, Finland

It’s the city we lived in for most of our lives and it’s the one place in the world we will always miss, no matter how far our adventures take us. So here’s a little tribute to Helsinki.. the streets, the sea, the parks and the awful weather.

Movie: War Horse
Location: Castle Combe, UK (on Google map)

Nothing is as cute and serene as this little stonehouse village in Wiltshire, England. It was a cold, misty morning when we drove down there in search of these photos. Our initial reaction was to move around very silently, as it felt like a private place and we didn’t want to wake anyone up.

Silly really, as it is a public street, but something about this place makes you want to behave with extra respect.

Well worth a visit - a perfect spot for a summer day’s cup of tea and a chat with the lovely locals. To find out more, visit Castle Combe’s website.

Fun detail: The table you can see just behind the iPad in Tom’s photo had a bunch of fresh home-baked cakes and goodies on it with a money jar for the payment. No seller in sight. That’s trust for ya!

Movie: Les Misérables
Location: Old Royal Naval College (on Google map)

This location has been used in several movies, but our visit was all about Les Misérables and Thor: The Dark World

It’s a very impressive spot to visit even if you’re not there for the same reasons as we fangirls - the Painted Hall alone will blow your mind. There’s a nice visitor centre as well for coffee and lunch.

Show: Da Vinci’s Demons
Location: Margam Country Park (on Google map)

We did this little roadtrip late in the fall. The day had a rather spooky ending at the gates of a dark quarry in the middle of nowhere, but before that particular experience, we visited this stunning location close to Swansea in Wales. During daytime, luckily.

Margam Country Park is a beautiful park area, and although we found our way there because of its use as a filming location, it’s also the perfect place to spend a summer day.

Da Vinci’s Demons was the reason for our visit, but unfortunately the castle was closed from public that day so we only got this one sceneframe outside. They were also filming Demons that very evening, but we couldn’t stay and wait all day… although we did consider staying so we could wave and smile (not at all creepily) at Tom & co from the parking lot on their arrival to the set.

Show: Sherlock
EpisodeThe Sign of Three, 3x02
Location: St Mary Magdalene Church, Bristol, UK (on Google map)

A beautiful little church hidden in a peaceful residential area in Bristol. It was a cold morning and our hands were freezing, we were giddy and high on roadtrip happiness, but standing there in the light of the rising sun had a very calming effect on all of us.

Our Vine clip from the churchyard.
